WebtraffIQ Alerts - Oct 28 2004
Web analytics agency,
Webtraffiq announces the launch of their new
SMS and email alert service, WebtraffIQ Alerts.
WebtraffIQ Alerts checks the customer's
website every 10 minutes, and then alerts them
by SMS and email if their sites do not respond.
Once the site is recovered, the customer will
receive a notification also by SMS and email,
informing them what has transpired.
The new 24 hour, 356 days a year service is
freely available to all current WebtraffIQ
clients; being an added functionality within
their administration settings option.
Notifications can be sent up to 10 individuals
to their mobile phones or email. ÔWebtraffIQ
Alerts' is also available as a stand-alone
service to companies wishing to invest in their
websites uptime.
Club Goers to By-pass the Queue Thanks to

Brighton's Creation nightclub is celebrating
the success of QJump, a new service which
enables club goers to by-pass the queue simply
by sending a text message. [via

The services allows clubbers to send a text
message to gain a place on the Creation
guestlist, avoiding the thousand strong queue.
The SMS QJump service has been successfully
trialled in Brighton first, and is now to be
rolled out to The Nightclub Company's 22
otherclubs nationwide.The system uses a simple
text message confirmation without a barcode and
is valid until 1am on the door.
The service, developed by mobile domain name
provider
iTagg, has proved hugely popular with
clubbers since its launch in the summer with
over 250 people a month jumping queues which
often exceed 1,000 people.
Company Launches Price comparison via SMS

Smarter.com has announced the beta launch of
its free shopping service via SMS, according to
Geek Zone.
"Smarter.com returns the lowest price found
for a specific product amongst hundreds of
merchants.
Consumers can access the free Smarter SMS
service by text messaging product names or SKUs
to (610) SMARTER or (610) 762-7837. Consumers
are free to search using generic keywords like
"mini ipods" or "dell dimension", but are
recommended to be as specific as possible, using
the SKU number for best results."

Flight Updates Sent Directly to your

An innovative text message service, called
Flight Tracker, is to undergo a six-month
trial, reports

"Launched by British Airways, this original
service allows customers to receive the latest
information on the status of their flight while
on the move.
Customers are simply required to text "track"
followed by their flight number to a designated
number (80747), and they will receive real time
flight departure, arrival and disruption
information taken directly from the British
Airways website ba.com.
Flight Tracker is available to any customer
on a British Airways operated flight with a UK
registered mobile phone. The service is not only
available to passengers - friends, family
members and associates can also take advantage
of the service, thus avoiding lengthy waits at
the airport."
Phones Power Bike Rental Scheme - 6

Oybike is a new mobile phone-operated
bicycle rental scheme designed to make getting
around easier and faster, reports the
BBC
"It is being trialled in Hammersmith and
Fulham, west London, where a number of rental
stations have been set up, but its inventors
hope it will soon be extended.
Anyone wanting to use an Oybike signs up and
pays a £10 annual fee, then uses their mobile
phone to unlock a bike for as long as they need.
The phone receives a pin number to unlock the
bike at the start of a journey and a second one
to lock it at the end and to determine how much
the rider is charged.
Other bike rental schemes exist, but Mr
Hammond believes none are as hi-tech as Oybike.
TXT2BET Kicks Off - May 19 2004
The UKâs first SMS-based gambling service is
being launched to coincide with the start of
Euro 2004, reports

users to bet on any game throughout this
summerâs football tournament. The service offers
punters the same choice of betting options and

Get your Mobile to Supply a Lying Alibi

Simeda, a Romanian company, is offering cell
phone sound alibi. For anyone considering lying
about their whereabouts, they can choose amongst
a selection of noises such as traffic jams,
heavy machinery, birds in the park or dental
equipment - to play in the background when
calling. Thunderstorms and circus parades are
also options, but they may be harder to believe.
Or one can record one's own background noise.
It's even possible to assign a background noise
to anyone in an address book - when they phone
back, the noise will play and back up the alibi.

and timing is becoming popular...In Ireland,
Dublin train passengers can
now get live status updates by SMS. The
DARTXT system follows from the Dublin Bus SMS
timetable texting service - BUSTXT launched in
July 2003 that has been a great success with an

Meanwhile,
in Melbourne, Australia , train commuters
are among the first users of an SMS service
introduced this year by one of Victoria's
private public transport operators, Connex. The
service allows commuters to get the latest
departure, changeover, and arrival times for
their train line by tapping in the first five

IT Sets the Pace at London Marathon -

This year's Flora London Marathon will be the
most IT-enabled race in the history of the
event, reports

"More than 33,000 runners competing in the
marathon on 18 April will have their positions
tracked and recorded by electronic tags attached
their shoes.
Friends and family of competitors will also
be able to follow their progress by signing up
to an SMS text message service that will send
athletes' positions as they make their way
around the 26 mile, 385 yard course.
Special mats will be positioned every 5km
along the marathon course. When an athlete runs
over the mat, their time and position is sent to
an Oracle database.
At locations throughout the course when
people run across some of the mats it will
trigger an SMS message."

Claiming Unpaid Fines by SMS - Mar 24

Radical measures are being planned by the
Australian State Government's Fines Payment Unit
as the number of outstanding fines and penalties
continues to spiral at the rate of almost $1
million a month.
The unit is running a pilot program using SMS
to remind people who have been issued with a
court summons.
"If we can get people to come in earlier and
make an arrangement to pay it off, that's what
we are aiming for," Acting manager of the Fines
Payment Unit, Marc Marshall said, in an
interview in the
The Advertiser.
This is not the first time Government or
private agencies around the world have used text
messaging as a useful and effective way to send
out a reminder for overdue rent, unpaid fines,
outstanding payments - even tuition.

collections centre staff are now sending text
message reminders to people who continue to
avoid paying overdue reparation and fines. [Press

paying parents receive the following SMS: "A

the messages go out, the school receives a lot

hailing as a success, an experiment in which
tenants behind on their rent payments were sent
reminders by text messaging. Out of the 200
tenants sent SMS messages adivising them their
rent was overdue, the response rate was of 40%,
with five responses arriving within 10 minutes
of being sent.
